Kohlbach was hot on the tail of a U.S. fighter when Second Lieutenant Wilbert
W. White of the U.S. 147th Aero Squadron interceded on his squadron-mate’s
behalf by colliding head-on with Kohlbach’s aircraft. Kohlbach successfully
baled out but White died in the collision. White received a posthumous Oakleaf
Cluster for his Distinguished Service Cross and credit for downing Kohlbach
as his seventh aerial victory. Interestingly, Kohlbach also received credit
(his fifth victory) for downing White’s Spad XIII fighter by collision.
