[Commanded by Generalleutnant Ludwig Merker, the 35th Infantry Division served as a component of General der Infanterie Hans Schmidt’s IX Army Corps under Army Group Center.[1] The division served in largely static and quiet positions near Gzhatsk during the winter of 1942-1943. In February 1943, after gaining Hitler’s consent to shorten his lines, Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge withdrew Army Group Center from the salient around Rzhev in an operation codenamed “Büffel” (Buffalo). The withdrawal was completed the next month and the 35th Infantry Division manned new positions in the vicinity of Yelnya. In August 1943, the Russians unleashed a massive offensive against the positions held by Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici’s 4th Army—to which the IX Army Corps was subordinated—between Yelnya and Spas-Demensk. Supported by large-scale partisan activity and air attacks, the Russians forced Heinrici’s army to withdraw and liberated Smolensk on 25 September 1943. NOTE: Photographs of Generalmajor Lottner taken after the war at Island Farm Special Camp 11 clearly depict him relying on a crutch for support as his right leg had been amputated. Although the circumstances of the amputation are unknown, it could be presumed he lost his leg as a result of wounds sustained in combat.]
