  • 10 November 1939: Commander of Infantry Regiment 135 of the 45th Infantry Division. [Commanded by Generalleutnant Friedrich Materna, the 45th Infantry Division took part in the invasion of France in May-June 1940.]
  • 15 November 1940-18 December 1941: Commander of Division Nr. 191. [Based in Braunschweig, this training and replacement division provided basic training for new recruits.]
  • 30 December 1941-10 April 1942: Commander of the 90th Light Infantry Division in North Africa. [On 10 December 1941, Generalmajor Max Sümmermann, commander of the 90th Light Infantry Division, was killed in a British air attack on his command vehicle. Oberst Johann Mickl assumed temporary leadership of the division until Generalmajor Veith arrived in North Africa to take permanent command. Generalmajor Ulrich Kleemann in turn, succeeded Veith on 10 April 1942 as divisional commander.]
  • 25 June 1942: General for Special Employment with Army Group North on the Eastern Front.
  • 20 March 1944: General for Special Employment with Army Group Center on the Eastern Front.   
  • 27 May 1945-17 May 1948: Prisoner of war in British captivity.
    • 9 January 1946 transferred to Island Farm Special Camp 11 from Camp 1
    • 12 May 1948 transferred to Camp 186 for repatriation.
